New York City Fire Life and Safety Director (FLSD) Practice Test

The correct answer is that smoke detectors should undergo a cleaning procedure at least every six months according to manufacturer’s specifications. This frequency is important because smoke detectors can accumulate dust, dirt, and other debris over time, which can interfere with their ability to detect smoke and function properly. Regular cleaning helps to ensure their reliability and effectiveness in alerting occupants to potential fire hazards.

While some manufacturers may specify different intervals, the general guideline for many devices is to clean them every six months as a proactive measure. This practice not only helps maintain optimal performance but also extends the lifespan of the smoke detectors. Adhering to this routine contributes to enhancing fire safety measures within a building, ensuring that all alarms remain functional and ready to respond in an emergency.
